Native VST support for Ardour

Today, in a message on the Ardour site, Paul Davis announced that within a few weeks (he mentions 2) Ardour will have native open source support for VST plug-ins. Getting VST plug-in support was a technical and involved process up until now, but with the new version you can host the VST plug-ins right in Ardour. This is very good news that can significantly enlarge the Ardour user base, which in turn will help the development of Ardour. Getting all this goodness requires a bit of patience until the new release is out, but I don't mind...

In the past, Ardour relied on the Steinberg VST-SDK header files for this plug-in support, but this meant the software was no longer entirely open source anymore. Therefore it was (legally) impossible to distribute binary releases with VST support, and the user that wanted this support had to compile and build the program from the source code. This is something most average users don't want to get into, and frankly, shouldn't have to. Because Ardour will now use the Vestige header (that was reverse-engineered keeping it completely open source) this is now no longer necessary, making it possible for all users to use their VST plug-ins.
